The Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists (MFVN) asked Mississippi Mills candidates in the forthcoming municipal election, to take a few minutes to reply to a questionnaire felt to exemplify some of their key concerns over the health of the natural world within our municipality.

Compiled by Michael McPhail, chair of the MVFN Environmental Issues Committee, the questionaire listed one of MFVN’s main themes; the environmental integrity of our area. The candidates were requested to make responses reflective of their personal opinions and desires on these issues.

Despite the receipt of the questionnaire in the midst of a hectic campaign, one hundred percent of Mississippi Mills candidates took the time to respond. The MVFN felt that this in itself is indicative of the high level of awareness by all candidates to environmental issues and their importance in the municipality. Clearly ensuring the safety of our groundwater supply and resolving the challenges of sewage/septic and solid waste diversion and disposal are considered major issues facing the municipality. It was refreshing to note references by candidates to the importance of our waterways and wetlands.

The creation of environmental and waste management committees in the municipality of Mississippi Mills should be applauded. The continued increased participation and support of citizens in municipal decisions and processes will provide our elected candidates an opportunity to implement the many constructive ideas to preserve our natural world.

It was noted that to date, two candidates out of thirteen in Lanark Highlands and zero out of seven Beckwith candidates had responded to a similar candidate polling by the MFVN.

The Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists (MFVN) would like to thank all candidates for their participation in this survey. The compilation of the responses from individual municipal candidates can be viewed above.
